PILATES, GYM AND POOL-BASED EXERCISE
PILATES CLASSES AND EXERCISE THERAPY
We believe the key to injury or pain recovery is movement. It’s one of the most fundamental things, we often take for granted. Inability to move well can lead to all kinds of additional problems. So finding the right type of functional movement for each client is one of the first things we look at.
Our philosophy is all about empowering our clients to overcome their limitations. So finding enjoyable ways to exercise, and manageable goals to work towards are two of our main priorities. If a client hates the gym environment, there is no point sentencing them to hours on resistance machines, because they just won’t do it. Perhaps they enjoy being in a pool more, or out on their bicycle, or at home with their favourite music playing. Rehab exercises can be repetitive and boring, but finding a way to make them enjoyable means better client participation and faster recovery.
We use the latest technology from Vald Telehab to provide every client with exercises or stretches they can easily access at home via a free to use app. The app allows us to prescribe exercises, which our clients can follow in real time, with video demonstrations, and feedback forms.
As well as having access to the gym and a local swimming pool in Paignton, we often make use of the beach or local parks for late stage return to sport rehab. Tamsin, the lead clinician at Personal Best, also teaches Pilates classes at Winners 2000. She believes Pilates is one of the best forms of exercise for encouraging healthy, functional movement.
Pilates is based on core strengthening, body weight exercise. Everybody can do a version of it, no matter how mobile they are. Slowing down common exercises means it promotes stronger links between the mind and body. Balance and proprioception can improve, meaning more stability for other types of fitness training, and less propensity for trips and falls in older age.
We have several members who attend pilates weekly over the course of years, and they report so many benefits from this type of regular exercise. Increased strength, mobility and balance, feeling healthier and more energetic, and one lady even reported a decrease in her golf handicap as a result of regular sessions.
